Department of Hindustani Music

Introduction

The department of Hindustani Music was established in the academic year 1979 -80 with the affiliation to Karnataka University Dharwad. The Principal Prof. S.V. Kinagi. realized the importance of the study of Hindustani Music in U.G level and laid foundation to the department. Which was inaugurated by Noted Hindustani Vocalist. Padmavibhushan Dr. Mallikarjun Mansur. training the minds of young Students in Classical Music. The Great Scholars such as Prof. Maheshkumar Chinchakhandimath (Vocal), Prof. V.G. Mahapurush (Sitar), and Prof. S.C. Ballur (Tabla). Laid Strong foundation and later noted teachers like Dr. S.V. Mathapati add coloured to the department.

Student can opt classical vocal or Sitar or Tabla as one of the optional and receive training in their respective field. The main motto of the department is to encourage and provide facility to learn and spread Hindustani Classical Music among youths in rural and urban area. With the intention of give birth to the new performing young artists in respective fields.

The department also started intercollegiate Hindustani Classical Music competition in Vocal, Sitar, and Tabala with intention of providing platform for young Student artists in respective fields.
